With that being said preparing your above ground swimming pool for draining is still pretty straightforward and can be broken down into a series of simple easy to follow steps.
Pools will need to be drained and refilled every 5 7 years on average or if there is a major necessary repair.
You can use a submersible pump or siphon the water out with a garden hose.
I personally recommend using a combination of the two because siphoning is pretty fast but a pump will help remove that last foot or so of water that the siphon can t quite get to.
In many cases a partial drain will get the job done if you have a main drain and a sand or de filter you can close the skimmers and pump the pool down on backwash or waste to about 3 from the shallow end floor then fill it back up again.

Drain the water down leaving a foot or so of water in the pool.
You could drain it down even lower but you must work fast as the sun will cause the pool liner shrink in as little as a day.
Otherwise avoid draining your pool if at all possible.
You need to test your chlorine and ph levels with a good test kit which are more accurate than test strips and bring your ph level to about 7 8 by adding sodium carbonate to increase it or sodium bisulfate will also need to make sure the chlorine is at least above 1 ppm.
Do not drain the water directly next to your pool because that 20 000 gallons of drained water may seep underneath the pool causing erosion or soil shifting problems.

Depending on the size of your pool the draining process can take as little as an hour and as long as half a day while you wait for the water to empty.
